Week 3 Bestiary Exam update, release date and the stay alive project

25/9/2015

Another week has gone by and as usual we havent been on the lazy side here at Twin Creation Games.

Features and Bug fixing

This week we sat down to finally add highly requested features and fix the few bugs we have seen popping up in Bestiary Exam.  Here is a small list over what we have done.

  • Added sound/mute icon that allows you to turn of and on ingame volume.
  • Increased difficulty as the game goes on in high score mode by reducing time cards are shown.
  • Removed lingering text after the cards were shuffled.
  • Updated description on all monsters.
  • Updated Bestiary with additional information on all monsters.
  • Removed the the possibility of getting the same right answer/card several turns in a row.

Even more monsters!

While Niklas was fixing bugs and adding features i have kept the pace up trying to expand the content of the game by creating more monsters. Here are some of the new monsters on the way. More will be comming as i finish them.

Stay Alive Project

Stay Alive is an action arcade game where you try to keep yourself alive against hordes of demons using the weapons and gimmicks the maps has to offer. This game project was started by the two of us at Twin Creation Games in our second year as game design and programmer student respectivly. After quite a bit of down time we have finally gotten around to finishing up the game using our spare time.

One of the things we accomplished this week was to integrate the game with the Kongregate API(As we will use it as our publishing platform) as well as creating a new gimick, the seed cannon. (Work in progress)

Release date and closing words

As we are approaching the completion of Bestiary Exam we have been discussing when to release the game. At the current point in time we are aiming for a release at friday 9th of October. This should give us time to add the content we want for our game as well as give us time to prepare a new trailer and other material we want to have ready in  time.

That is not to say the game will be completely done, but rather that the game is ready to be released worldwide. After that it all comes down to the feedback we collect from our players where we take the game next.

In regards to Stay Alive no date has been set in stone yet, but we are hoping to have it done and ready by the time the Norwegian game convention Spillexpo takes place.(6-8 November) The two of us here at Twin Creation Games are planning on being a part of the indiestand there set up by Hamar Game Collective. So if you are at Spillexpo feel free to stop by and try our games! (And potentially an unnanounced game demo!)

Thats going to be it for this weeks update. Hope to see you next week!

Week 2 Bestiary Exam Progress Update

18/9/2015

Another week has passed(Time flies when you have fun!) and its time for another update on what we at Twin Creation Games have been doing the past week.

More content!

As stated in the previous weeks blog one aspect of the game we felt was lacking with our Norwegian soft launch was content. 12 cards/monsters is a rather modest amount and with more emphasis being put on the Bestiary(Will come back to this) we felt having more monsters would be a good thing. Thus this week i have been working on new monsters for the game, here is a little sneakpeak.
By the time of the worldwide release we hope to have atleast 20 monsters, preferably more and depending on how the game goes there might be more comming.

Focus on intuitive gameplay and the role of the Bestiary

Among some of the feedback we got when we released the game was that the text was hard to read and became more of a distraction when trying to understand what cards match any given description. Due to this feedback we have decided to redo description of all monsters so that by understanding the picture alone the player can link the two together to get the right answer.

At the same time we really like having lore behind the monsters that players can read up upon. Thus with the next patch we will be expanding the information in the Bestiary. This will not only insure it is a good tool in improving your play, but also be a feature of its own that appeal to those of us with an inner lore nerd.

Programming, misc features and other games

Most of the functionality of  the game outside of a few smaller features are allready in place, thus freeing up the programmer(My brother) to do other things.

One of the projects currently being worked on in paralell to Bestiary Exam is Stay Alive, an old student project of ours. Stay Alive is a web based game where the objective is to keep yourself alive for as long as possibble against ever increasing hordes of enemies. To do this you have to use objects on the map while avoiding them using the different classes special abilities.

In addition there is also another yet untitled project in the works that is set in the same universe as Bestiary Exam. For now this small teaser will have to do.

Note that these are some very early sprites made for testing purposes and without context are not representative of the final game.

Closing words

That is it for this weeks blog. Have any questions or comments you want to share? Feel free to do so below. If not the two of us at Twin Creation Games hope you have a good weekend. See you next time!

The first weekly blog and Bestiary Exam Feedback

11/9/2015

On tuesday we finally released our first game, Bestiary Exam for android users in Norway. After the release we have gotten a lot of feedback that the core concept is good, but some aspects can be improved upon. Having compiled all the information we have gathered we are now currently working on improving several aspects of the game before the worldwide release. Here are some of our thoughts.

Graphical Improvements

When we initially started on developing the game we used a significant amount of older assets we allready had in our database, focusing on content and design. This has left certain assets(Including monsters) somwhat lacking artisticly. This is not to mention that some of the original monster drawings where not planned to use with cards and as such might not have the contrast or the image composition to fit the format. This is something we are looking at adressing with the next patch. But for now here is a sneak peak.

The text being to Small on mobile phones and to distracting

We have gotten feedback that the text is to small, and takes to long to read while playing. In regards to this we are currently considering removing the actual text and replacing it with fillers on all the cards. To this end all the descriptions will fit the content in the image hopefully creating more intuitive gameplay. The text will hovever not be thrown out of the game.  To read up on all the cool monsters(See what i did there?) simply go into the bestiary and pick your favorite.

We are thinking something akin to this.

More content

Due to the simple nature of the game having more content will help greatly, thus more monsters are planned for worldwide release. As of now we unfortunatly dont have anything to show as we have been focusing our efforts on existing content and the core mechanics of the game.

Bug Fixes and misc features

Some reports of unintended features and bugs have come in, fortunatly most of them are easy to fix. One such example being the chance being to high of getting a card multiple times in a row. This should be fixed shortly.

Other request include having a mute button so its possibble to listen to music while playing, not being prompted to log in to google game service before checking the leaderboards, having a dedicated exit button etc which will be looked at in time.

Closing words

This is going to be the first in a series of weekly blogs about our progress here at Twin Creation Games. If you have any feedback or comments feel free to post them below or send a mail to the adress listed on the contact page.

Hope you all have a good weekend and see you next week!

The Bestiary Exam soft launch and the road ahead

Finally the game is released!

Twin Creation Games started its activities roughly 2 months ago after me and my brother graduated university. Having only worked on student projects previously working on actually getting a game published has been a big step for us. That is also why we choose a smaller project as our first game. Letting us focus on mechanics, testing and publishing rather than an endless wave of content.

Despite this being a big step, it is only the first of many. Already just hours after the game was released in Norway, have we gotten valuable feedback that will hopefully allow us to improve our game even further. We also have another unnanounced game project in the works, but we leave that for another day.

For now we are just content to have taken our very first steps into the world of game development.
