The creation of a demo

Another friday is here and as the date of spillexpo is slowly approaching the panic and stress is starting to come in full force. Here is this weeks update on our work here at Twin Creation Games!

Putting together a demo for our yet untitled project

Our plan for Spillexpo was to show of our current main project, an arena fighting/survival game for the web browser. Off course as we are nearing the deadline we have come to realize that things generally take longer than expected. Fortunatly it still seems like we will make it, although barely. 

The plan for our demo is as follows:
  • Show of core gameplay.
  • Show of 1 of the 4 planned heroes
  • Show of a variety of distinctly different enemies. 
  • Have a decent looking arena complete.

Current status
  • Core gameplay with enemy spawns, combat enhanced by dynamic camera, score and healthbar is present.
  • Shadow Stalker, our first Hero is completely functional.
  • 2 Different enemies, the Primordial Cannine and Frost Golem are complete. Frost Golem is unique in the sense that it slows the player if it gets close.
  • Arena is mostly complete, but lack some details and polish. (Some of our stuff is not implemented into the gif below yet)

​The work ahead

So what do we have to do in order to complete it for Spillexpo? Well...
  • Polish the core gameplay, tweak numbers on spawning, health etc for fluid gameplay.
  • Creating additional icons and interface elements for clarity in battle.
  • Creating the Earth Golem.
  • Adding frost particles and other enemy effects.
  • Creating some more detail and decorating our arena.

In addition to the things we have to do it would be nice if we managed to squeze in some time for animation polish on the enemies. 

Shadow Stalker

The Shadow Stalker is a fast paced melee hero that rely on getting in and out of fights with lethal attacks to survive. His 4 abilities are as follows. (These are subject to change)
  • Shadow Shroud: The Shadow Stalker heals 50% and can go through enemies for the next 3 seconds. 20 sec cooldown. 
  • Dash Strike: The Shadow Stalker dashes in its current direction stopping at the first enemy in his path, damaging them. 5 sec cooldown.
  • Backslash: The Shadow Stalker teleports behind the nearest enemy in front of him doing a powerful attack. 5 sec cooldown.
  • Darkness Call: The Shadow Stalker Calls upon 2 Deadvourers to aid him in battle. 30 sec cooldown.

The Earth Golem

The last enemy planned for our demo is the Earth Golem. The earth golem is a fierce enemy boosting a gargutan size with a large hp pool and a strong ranged and melee attack. (No animation preview as i have just started on them)

Closing words

That is going to be it for this weeks summary. Next week my thursday and friday will be occupied by Konsoll , a conference for Norwegian game developers with some very high quality speakers such as Alex Thrower, Jo-Remi Madsen, Jory Prum and James Portnow among others. This might impact the weekly blog, but i will do my best to make sure its delivered on time.
